Our Mission is to
introduce and promote the art of storytelling to the White Lake Community.
Very Simple.
If you have ever attended a jazz festival or a
folk music festival, you will find the format familiar. People move from
venue to venue, during the day, listening to a variety of stories. This
one day festival is geared to adults (not that the stories are
inappropriate for children, but this is really for adults). We are under
the umbrella of the White Lake Community Library, and the library’s
non-profit status.
Our committee believes that White Lake is a perfect location for a
storytelling festival. We see this as a place for people to come together,
reconnect, become inspired, enjoy and also bring artistic energy and
creativity to the challenges of living in our time.
You may be familiar with the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro,
Tennessee. They started back in the 70s. Today they attract storytellers
and listeners from all over the world. Jonesboro has much in common with
White Lake. They are a dot on the map with a beautiful setting. Our goal
is to be the next Jonesboro.
On November 12, 2005 we held our first festival. Montague Methodist
Church, Congregational Church in Whitehall and the Howmet Theater hosted
our event. We employed six professional
storytellers from Illinois and Michigan. There were three sessions at
each location, two tellers performing at each venue. Additionally, all six
tellers performed in concert at the Howmet in the evening. The evening
concert included folk singer, Mike Snell. For a modest price of $10.00
per ticket, one heard storytelling all day, and attended a great concert
in the evening.
This November 11, 2006 Our festival has grown! We have
five storytellers, a puppeteer and community drum circles. A full Saturday
event.
Our committee gathered some information at a trial balloon story telling
in the fall of 2004. One thing was loud and clear. We need to keep the
cost affordable. For this reason we reached
out for funding and were generously rewarded.
We believe art should be
accessible to everyone.
